Organizing business artifacts (without a tree view - oh my!)

It's easy to add panes and go with traditional tree views that add clutter to the existing experience.  I came up with a way for business users to nest artifacts into hierarchies, browse them, and search for them with minimal impact to the existing interface. Though complex in the details, I brought simplicity to the experience.

my roles:  User Research, Interaction Design

Customer pain point: Many customers had 100's of "spaces" (think folders), usually one for each team.  Collaborators found it difficult to find their documents and would use funky names in an attempt to organize them.

Design challenge:  Allow organizing spaces into spaces.  Think outside the box, avoid nested tree structure views.

So, after two pivots and many ideations, I created a flexible way for business users to group and nest documents in a minimalistic, yet powerful way .

Switching to my new view for top level spaces allows you to navigate to find the one you're looking for.

I left no detail unturned.  I specified how creation, archiving, moving, coping and administrative experiences should work.

When it came time to indicate where something should go, rather than click through heavy hierarchies to ultimately select a destination, I created a light experience for either placing it at the top level or typing the name of the space in which to add it (and it's path clear in context of making such a choice). The search to find artifacts was equally powerful.

Notice, you just type and select.
