Building marketplaces for selling software with IBM

We ran this project as if it were a lean start-up within IBM.  I tested hypothesis with UX activities in two-week sprints. My work shaped our strategy for syndicating software assets.  What started as an idea for many marketplaces became a simpler story with a single IBM marketplace.

my roles:  Strategy, Interaction Design, Visual Design

How I helped change IBM's strategy... Lean, Rapid Testing.

First, I designed what a marketplace might look like for one of the stores.   I took into account first time experiences, search and explore scenarios, as well as smart recommendations and community content.

Then I worked on a "sister" experience for asset owners to provide content.  The personas were very different, lending to new first time experiences, a store builder with themes, an editor for their content, and a management console for their assets.

I ran lean, two week iterations to test our vision.  Development ran with interaction designs only and we rapidly tested with users.

Once we had a better understanding of our vision, we began our first official release, choosing one marketplace as the example for others to follow suit.

Below are the visual designs I built for the store.  I created the thumbnails and icons in Illustrator, and the remaining page elements in Photoshop.

"Wow!  Very nice!"  Ron Perry, CTO of Worklight

Throughout the project, I work with our executives to drive the strategy, highlighting where there are complexities and identifying how we can simplify the experience.  The project shifted as a result of my work to a single IBM marketplace, instead of supporting endless independent stores.

My tile view also inspired designs for the new API Management release that came the next summer.
